Studies have revealed that there is a high percentage of protein, as well as carbohydrate, lipid, moisture, calcium, manganese, copper, chromium and ash, in Litopenaeus vannamei.
It also contains Omega - 6 and Omega - 3 and is considered as a good source of fatty acid as well as protein. It is also one of the most popular cultured shrimp species in the world.
Vannamei high-yield shrimp variety, also known as pacific white or white leg shrimp, was introduced to Sri Lanka in 2018, whereas other countries had adopted the variety in the 1990s. Vannamei is in higher demand globally.
While almost three-quarters of world shrimp species originate from developing countries, 70–75% of world consumption takes place in the developed world.
The Lipid of vannamei shrimp contains mostly polyunsaturated fatty acids (essential fatty acids). These essential fatty acids which are available in shrimp, provides health benefits for human e.g., eye (retina) and brain development / function.
